One fact that stands out is that the Kashmir problem is the creation of a weak Indian leadership. The first culprit was Jwaharlal Nehru who took the matter to the United Nations and security council, thus internationalizing the issue and second his promise of a plebicite. It beats the minds of people how Nehru could have committed such blunders. He followed up by adding a constitutional amendement in the form of Article 370 which conferred '
special status' on Kashmir. Having committed such blunders, the indian governmenet cannot say it is not a disputed state. The USA, West and Pakistan do not thus recognize the accession of kashmir to India as full and final. Frankly they cannot be blamed as the Indian leadership has not rectified the faults of Nehru( perhaps the one leader who will go down in history as the man who left perpetual problems after creating them).
Even in the 21st century the contentious Article 370 remains. This article needs to be deleted and the special status of Kashmir done away with. secondly why not have a plebicite in Kashmir? If need be the valley be seperated from Hindu Jammu and Ladakah and then watch whether the Muslims of the valley want to go with Pakistan? It requires a statesman to solve the problem. Can such a leader emerge? That is the million dollar question.
